Intermediate | Comprehensive 4-week training program for military veterans and community members interested in farming and ranching on Hawaiʻi Island. Scholarships available!

🌱 About this Program

Groundwork to Grow is a collection of four-week exposure-based trainings on various agribusiness topics. The program was created to support military veterans and community members interested in farming and ranching on Hawaiʻi Island by providing exposure, skill-based training, and a professional network aimed to help them succeed in agricultural careers. Our ideal participant is someone who already has introductory experience with farming and who is looking to dive deeper and become more invested.

Workshops will cover agriculture topics relevant to beginning farmers and ranchers on Hawaiʻi island, including:

  • Value-Added Production 
  • The Art of Beekeeping with Bird and Bee Hawai’i 
  • Greenhouse 
  • Livestock 
  • Orchard & Agroforestry
  • Master Food Preservers with Hawai’i Master Food Preservers
  • Agribusiness: Formation and Development
  • Agribusiness: Financial Literacy 
  • Agribusiness: Marketing and Sales 

Cost to attend 4-week workshops range from $99-$350, depending on the course and equipment.

*Most 4-week workshop consists of:

  • 4 Virtual Classroom sessions
    • Tuesdays from 5:30-7:00pm
  • 4 Field Days at local operational farms and businesses
    • Saturdays (timing may vary)
  • *Master Food Preserver course is 8 full days of in-class instruction and food preparation.

Groundwork to Grow trainings can host 8-12 participants per cohort, so space is limited. We will close registrations when capacity is met.

🚨 Past participation in one of our Intro to Grow one-day workshops is required before you can attend a 4-week Groundwork to Grow program.

  • Do I have to be veteran to sign up?

    Nope, our Groundwork to Grow courses are open to the public!

  • How do I get a scholarship?

    If you are a veteran, veteran family member, veteran caregiver or first responder then you are eligible for a scholarship. You can check the box on the program registration, and we’ll follow up for a copy of your DD214 or other proof of veteran status. You are still required to pay either the $99 fee or a $100 deposit depending on the course, but that is refunded to you after successful completion of all class days.

  • Where do the classes take place?

    Each class is different, but for the most part we meet at a different farm or business each of the 4 Saturdays on the East side of Hawai’i Island. Then we meet via Zoom on Tuesday evening.

⚠️ Safety Info

We conduct programs in accordance with federal, state, and local safety guidelines, including COVID protocols. Program participants please note the following:

  • Mask wearing and social distancing while in enclosed spaces is now optional, although we may reinstate COVID rules as needed.
  • Closed-toed shoes and sun protection should be worn in outdoor settings.
  • All on-site educational program participants must complete a liability waiver.
