Big Island Examples:

  • Kawamata Farms – Kamuela Tomatoes
    • “Kamuela’s Finest” tomatoes (trademark)
    • Naoji Kawamata moved to Big Island from Oahu in 1952
    • First specialty was roses (had 100,000 rose bushes in the 1970s)
    • 1995 – production shifted to tomatoes, grown using a hydroponic technique from the Netherlands
    • Today they produce 30,000 lbs of tomatoes per week!

 

  • Hawaii Farming LLC – Keiki Cukes
    • Commercial
    • “Keiki Cukes” first introduced in 2012
    • Ag Tech: “We invest in robotics and automation for continual crop cycle optimization, improving production yields and enabling faster delivery of the freshest produce to all our customers across Hawai’i.”
    • 12 acres of Greenhouse…
